Snow – New Brighton Model Photography
I have a whole host of snow and winter themed art shoots I’ve been working on. The long winter is probably my fault as I was excited about it early on…Â Now that it’s the winter that never ends, I know better! It seemed like the best way to send winter on it’s way was to post some of these projects so we can enjoy them with a sense of nostalgia instead of the impending doom…
Oh winter.
I generally don’t mind you but man, you sure overstayed your welcome this year!!

														Our Adopted Dog
We have talked off and on about getting a dog for a long time. We’ve lived in apartments the last decade or so and it really wasn’t an option. But it was always sort of there, floating around. As we’ve settled in to our house over the last couple years, deciding to add a dog to our family became a real option. I’ve always lived with pets and I love having them around. Now that our youngest is two it seemed like we might actually be able to start making the idea of having a dog a reality. In January we started researching rescue groups and talking to friends and trying to find a group we wanted to work with.
I ended up connecting with Safe Hands Rescue. I talked a bit with them and filled out an adoption application. They asked us to come to one of their adoption events to meet some of the dogs we were interested in. It was almost scary as things started to become real but we were in no rush and were happy to spend as much time on it as we needed to find the best fit for us. Now, we weren’t planning on getting a dog right away. We just wanted to start the process. Famous last words! They’re all just so frickin cute!
By the end of the event, we had a short list of three dogs we were interested in. It’s very hard to not just fall in love with all of them! We did a quick interview with an adoption coordinator while we were there and were on our way.
The dog we were most interested in by the time we left, was one that wasn’t even on our list when we got there. This was really just because I hadn’t looked too closely at his profile. He is a two year old Cocker Spaniel mix (our vet thinks Cocker Spaniel and Papillon) and is black with floppy ears. He’s 18lbs and a bit underweight but not by much. When he was first found, they had mislabeled him as being female. By the time he got to the rescue group they were surprised to find he was instead an intact male!
After going over everything, they determined we would probably be a good fit for this dog so his foster mom brought him over to see the house and meet everyone. We hadn’t been telling the kids too much because we didn’t want them to get too excited and we didn’t know how long it would take to find a good fit. They were just THRILLED.
He was just amazing when he came over. Just the sweetest little dog. He was so very tolerant of the children wanting to hug him and play with him. He wasn’t the least bit interested in our aging cat either. By the end of the meeting, he had climbed up into my lap and fallen asleep. We were all so in love with him it was hard to see him go.
One week later, we finalized his adoption and he came home to stay with us. He has been with us for a month now but it feels like so much longer. He’s a wonderful friend and companion and we can’t imagine life without him. It’s all the same things everyone says I’m sure but it’s astonishing how true it really is.
We’ve named him Remy and he and I are best friends now. He’s always at my side and is very, very sweet. He’s very good with the kids even when they’re not perfect with him. My daughter has already put a ribbon on his fur more than once. My youngest likes to sneak Remy his crackers when he thinks I’m not looking. Remy loves to frolic in the snow but he’s still thin so he doesn’t like to be outside for too long in the cold. My oldest and Remy like to run around the yard chasing each other until they’re too tired to do anything but come in and collapse. He’s learning his name and is doing well with commands. He loves to be with us and be a part of the game.
He’s a delight to have around even though he’s comfortable being here enough that he’s starting to be naughty hehe…
If you are looking to add a member to your family, please consider adopting an animal. If you adopt an animal, please consider supporting the great people at Safe Hands Rescue. You can see their available pets on their Petfinder listing and “like” their facebook page to keep current with their events. If you would like to volunteer with them, please contact them!
Thank you to everyone at Safe Hands Rescue for all your help in matching us with Remy (formerly Monty). I would like to especially thank his foster mom Amy for going above and beyond in caring for him and helping me through the process. You are all doing amazing work.
Now of course, there has to be pictures. He’s still not so sure about the studio with all the lights and me asking him to sit in a spot that’s NOT right next to me, but we’ll get there!

Brittany and Erik – Maple Grove wedding photographer
Brittany and Erik were married at the Elm Creek Chalet in Maple Grove. Unfortunately it was a very cold and blustery day so the ceremony was moved inside. We did brave the elements for a few pictures but the wind was definitely a big factor! The fall accents were really beautiful and we had a really wonderful time together. Thank you for having me be a part of your day!

														Happy Valentine’s!
Did you get engaged this Valentine’s Day? Congratulations!
I’m thrilled to make this special offer to all newly engaged couples out there in the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. I am giving away a FREE engagement session to the first THREE couples who book with me.
I absolutely love doing engagement sessions. I know some people want to do them but it’s simply not in the budget. Doing an engagement session is a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera and shake out those camera anxieties before your wedding day. It’s also a chance to do something really fun and personal!
Check out some of my recent engagement shoots via the “engagements” tag, or have a look at Amanda and Zach’s beautiful winter engagement here.
These will go quickly so let me know if you’re interested! I hope you all enjoyed your Valentine’s Day as much as we did.
This offer is first come first served, and not good with any other offer or promotion. Only couples who book wedding photography coverage are eligible for this offer.

Jennifer and Nathan – Chaska wedding photographer
Jennifer and Nathan had their family ceremony on Memorial day weekend. Nathan is a service member and they had been married before he left for his last tour. Now that he was back state side again, they wanted to have a nice wedding to celebrate with their friends and family. They both come from military families so having their wedding on Memorial Day weekend was a nice way to honor the veterans in their families.
They were married at City Square Park in Chaska on what ended up being one of the hottest days of the year. They were a really fun group and we all had a lot of fun together even though we had to make some changes to the schedule because of the heat! Their officiant was so much fun too. He was having a great time which meant so did everyone else!
The reception was at the Grand Palms Wedding and Event Center in Chaska. It was just down the street so we all walked on over. The speaches were so touching and moving and everyone was just so sweet. They had a Norwegian wedding cake called a Kransekake. It was so beautiful and a really fun counterpoint to the array of cupcakes.
Once the party started everyone really let loose! It was so much fun and everyone was dancing. It was really wonderful celebration and I am glad I was able to be a part of it. Congratulations Jennifer and Nathan!

Marissa and Wesley – Farmington wedding photographer
Marissa and Wesley were married at St. Micheal’s Catholic church in Farmington, Minnesota. Marissa was the fourth woman in her family to wear her wedding dress! It was a beautiful family heirloom and it was so amazing to see all the women who wore it together at her wedding. We made stops at the Dakota county fairgrounds at St. Olaf College for pictures before making it to the Vintage Ballroom and Suites for the reception. It was a long, full day and I was thrilled to be a part of it.

Amanda and Zach – Edina Engagement Photographer
Amanda and Zach have been together for years and just got engaged. They are so cute together and so young! They were excited to have some pictures done and braved the winter cold for some fun in the snow. We met up at Centennial Lakes Park in Edina and later moved to a coffee shop to warm up. They were great to work with and were willing to let me try out a few new ideas.
I can’t wait for their 2014 wedding!

														My 2012 365 project
In 2012, I decided to undertake a 365 project. I decided to do it on the theme of toys because I think a theme helps move the project along and I have a few toys around the house!
I really wanted to do it so as a way of practicing and using my tools and sort of expanding my comfort level and confidence. It’s a creativity challenge for sure!
2012 was a leap year too so it was technically a 366 project! I also did a “Day In The Life” project with Team Photoblog so that’s included as well.
It started out strong but after a few months I started to lag. I decided to give myself some more specialized challenges to keep it going. I worked with colors for several weeks and that helped.
After I broke my leg, things started to change. I was of course a bit depressed and I derailed a bit. Once I got things back together, I sort of loosed my interpretation of the guidelines of my project. The concept of “toy” was definitely expanded. I’m ok with this. I think it’s interesting to see how things changed.
I’ve included a few of the images here but you can see the whole project set in my 365 project gallery! I have included the very first and my very last image from the set here as well.

Katherine and Matt – Minneapolis wedding photographer
Katherine and Matt’s wedding was really quite unique and not just because it was the ever elusive Thursday wedding. They had a very small and intimate wedding at the Theo Wirth Fireplace Room in beautiful Theodore Wirth park, Minneapolis.
The guest list was almost exclusively family so there were just over twenty people in attendance. The bride made dozens and dozens of paper flowers and decorative wax bowls for the ceremony along with a large wooden tea lite tree for above the mantle. The decorations were just amazing! (Only one caught fire right before they were about to walk down the isle. A fast thinking guest tossed it into the fireplace though and no one was the wiser until after the ceremony!)
They each wrote their own vows. Katherine’s were very sweet and thoughtful. Matt’s were probably the most entertaining vows I’ve ever heard. He referenced barbeque ribs (several times), zombie apocalypse survival, time travel and a myriad of other things. It was really hard to not giggle!
Their reception was held at Ambiente Gallerie in the gallery space. There was a really great photography display on that I quite enjoyed. The table decorations were beautiful. Like almost everything else, they were made by the bride! She painted a bunch of thrift store vases and filled them with flowers for the table.
It turns out, all that talk about barbaque was in part because Matt had made his signature dry rub and sauces as wedding favors! There were a few different kinds and it looked amazing.
They also had a sushi chef from Fuji Ya making fresh sushi rolls. It was amazing! They even had a custom roll created for them for the event.
Everyone was really sweet and so much fun to work with. I could not have been happier to be a part of this wedding. Congratulations team Matt and Kat!
On a personal note, this was also my last wedding with my favorite assistant. He is now in Korea teaching English. I will have to struggle on without him! Thanks for all your great work! And for driving the golf cart while I closed my eyes….
